A major crisis hit the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State on January 22, 2026, when the full leadership of Ward 5 in Calabar Municipality resigned and switched to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The move highlights growing rifts inside the PDP, with resignees blaming internal conflicts and the party’s weak role as an opposition.
Ward Chairman Essien Akabom Eyo led the pack, citing “internal conflict and inability to act as a viable opposition” in his letter. He thanked the party for past opportunities but quit immediately.

Margaret Bassey the Party Secretary called her exit “tough but necessary,” appreciating her time in the position.

Joseph Ephraim blamed the party’s failure to oppose effectively.
Emmanuel Ekpo, Councilorship candidate in the last local government election pointed to “internal conflict” no focus, used and dumped party system after talking to his constituents.
Patrick Ekpo Archibong slammed the PDP for not playing its opposition role amid clashes within party organs.
Odiso Essien left for personal reasons, thanking the party for opportunities.
Efefiom Edet Effiom also cited personal choice, wishing the PDP success.
Although none of the letters explicitly named the ADC, sources close to the matter confirmed the group’s shift to the rival party, potentially strengthening ADC’s base in Calabar Municipality.
