Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, recently convened a meeting with the newly sworn-in chairmen of the state’s 18 Local Government Areas.
The gathering, held at the Glass House in Calabar, served as both a congratulatory and strategic session, focusing on the roles and responsibilities each chairman will fulfill.
Odey, while congratulating the chairmen on their successful elections, reminded them of their new status as Chief Security Officers for their localities.
He urged them to prioritize key issues such as security, the provision of basic amenities, and rural development, stressing that their leadership should reflect Governor Senator Bassey Edet Otu’s “People First” initiative.
Odey highlighted the importance of working to improve the welfare of all residents, ensuring that government presence is felt in every community.
Speaking to the media afterward, Pastor Mrs. Mercy Nsor, Chairperson of Ikom Local Government Area, expressed her dedication to addressing the needs of her community and fostering development.
Meanwhile, Apostle James Anam, Chairman of Calabar Municipality, outlined his vision to revitalize Calabar’s clean city status by installing streetlights in underlit areas and reopening long-blocked streets. Anam noted that the community would play a vital role, involving traditional leaders and youth groups to protect and take ownership of these projects.
Hon. Chris Agbeh, Chairman of Ogoja LGA, also addressed his plans to emphasize entrepreneurship and enhance healthcare delivery for his constituents. Chief Victor-Felix Idem, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, was also present at the meeting, underscoring the state’s commitment to collaborative and accountable local governance.
