The federal government, through the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), has launched a N5 billion clean energy initiative aimed at providing affordable access to solar home systems for women across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
Speaking at the launch during a stakeholders’ engagement forum in Abuja, CREDICORP’s Managing Director, Engr. Uzoma Nwagba, announced that the credit would be disbursed under the Credit Access for Light and Mobility (CALM) Fund.
He said the initiative seeks to create sustainable and inclusive financing opportunities, enabling women to power their homes and small businesses with clean, reliable energy.
“This initiative offers more than just electricity—it provides a pathway for women to earn, save and build a verifiable credit history,” Nwagba said.
He highlighted the evolution of CREDICORP’s mission—from enabling over 35,000 Nigerian civil servants to access general credit, to supporting life-enhancing products such as mobility solutions and now clean energy.
“We’re expanding access to digital devices, home improvements, and micro machinery. This is how consumer credit should work—unlocking everyday possibilities for better living,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, Mrs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs, said the launch of the initiative signals the start of a broader national wave, PowerHer 774, a ministry-led effort aimed at delivering clean energy and economic empowerment tools to three million women across all LGAs.
